Federal service commission jobs are open to anyone with the proper qualifications and experience. They are also a good way to earn extra income.
Most selections are made through a competitive process that is open to all applicants. Occasionally, hiring officials may select solely from applicants who are eligible for Schedule A positions for people with disabilities.

Internships
Interns are a great way to learn more about the federal government and see what the job of a commission involves. Many internships are open to all interested candidates, while others are only for current FCC employees.

Promotions
Federal government jobs are usually filled through competitive examinations of your background, work experience, and education. Sometimes you may be asked to demonstrate a specific skill or talent that is needed for the job.
Applicants who pass the civil service exam are given a recruitment bonus up to 25 percent of their base pay. Relocation bonuses are also sometimes granted for current federal employees who want to relocate for work.
For this study, we compared promotion rates of employment equity groups to their counterparts over a 13 year period (April 2005 to March 2018). In part 1 of our analysis, we determined the percentage of applications by each group that were successful in obtaining promotions.
Pay
The pay and benefits offered by federal service commission jobs vary depending on the agency. Most are paid under the General Schedule (GS), although some exceptions exist, such as positions at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and the Foreign Service Institute.
In addition to pay, federal employees are entitled to a variety of other benefits, including a generous leave program, such as annual leave and sick leave. In some cases, you may be able to accumulate more than 560 hours of annual leave each year.
The civil service was developed to meet the needs of the country. It was designed to provide job security, a high level of pay, and adequate work conditions. It was also designed to provide an equal opportunity for advancement.
Holidays
Holidays are days of observance offered by some employers. These include Washington’s Birthday (Third Monday in February), Memorial Day, and July 4th.
Some states require that some employers observe national holidays and provide paid time off to employees. For example, Massachusetts requires employers to provide time off for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Federally chartered banks may also pay employees for working on some federal holidays, typically by a union contract.
State and local governments also observe their own holidays, but are not required to do so. Similarly, some private businesses may choose not to operate on certain holidays or pay employees less for them.
